2017-2018 Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten registration will begin on February 1, 2017.

All completed registration packets must be submitted in person at the Central Registration Office, 1301 Bonnell Avenue, 2nd Floor. Packets and a list of required documentation is available in each elementary office, on-line @ www.readingschools.org or at the board office.

Kevin Kaiser Named to Board of Education Kevin Kaiser

The Reading Board of Education named Kevin D. Kaiser to the Board of Education at its regular Board meeting on January 18.  Mr. Kaiser replaces Mr. Dan Kunkel, who resigned on December 31, 2016. 


Massey Benefit February 4, 2017

A benefit will be held on February 4, 2017 from 6:30-11:00pm at Haffey Field House in honor of Mike Massey.  

PK-12 School Construction Manager to Hold Informational Meeting

The Construction Manager for the Reading Community Schools will conduct an informational meeting on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at 10 a.m. in the City Council Chambers, 1000 Market Street, Reading.

First Quarter Character Awards Presented

The Reading Board of Education was proud to present first quarter Character Awards at the Board meeting on November 16, 2016. 

Crossing Guard Needed

Donkey Basketball is Back!

Come watch teachers from all four buildings ride donkeys while attempting to play basketball. It's a hilariously good time and is taking place November 18 in Reading High Gymnasium.

The Boosters will be holding their annual Holiday Spirit Wear Sale on Friday, November 11th 2:00pm-7:00pm and Saturday, November 12th from 9:00am-1:00pm. in the high school cafeteria.

There will be NO SCHOOL on Friday, October 14th due to Teacher Inservice Day.

Important Safety Message from Superintendent

We are happy that we had a safe and fun homecoming parade, game, and dance this weekend. We are lucky to live in such a great community. School is in session for Monday, October 3. I have been working with the Reading Police Department and there will be increased police patrols.

District Names New Administrators

Reading Community City School District welcomes two new administrators to the district. Mrs. Rebecca Johnson is the new Student Services Director and Mr. Jon Payne is the new Assistant Principal and Athletic Director of Reading High School.

Interruption to District Telephones and Email Service

On Thursday, June 23 and Friday, June 24 the district's internet and telephone service will be under maintenance.  There may be long periods of no service of our internet and telephones.  Thank you for your patiences.

School Smiles Coming to Reading Schools

School Smiles, a mobile dental care service, is coming to Reading Schools. Appointments for Central Elementary are on April 27, 2016. Appointments for Hilltop, middle school and high school are on May 3, 2016.

RMS National Honor Society Date Change

The RMS National Honor Society Induction Ceremony will be held in the Middle School gym on April 28, 2016 at 7:30p.m.  Please note that this is a date change.



Prom 2016 Information

Reading High School Prom is at the Newport Aquarium on Friday, April 22, from 8:00 pm - Midnight and ticket sales are going on now at the high school.

Community Meetings on Transition Spaces

Beginning in the 2017-18 school year, some Reading students will need to be relocated during the construction phase.  Join us for meetings about this transition.

Announcement from Board of Education

The Reading Board of Education held a special meeting on Tuesday, June 14, and placed Superintendent Dr. Joel Anderson on paid administrative leave. The Board plans to name Chuck LaFata as the interim Superintendent at its June 22 meeting.

Phone and Internet Down 7/13 & 7/14

Reading School District phones and internet services will be down on Wednesday, July 13 through Thursday, July 14. Normal service is scheduled to resume on Friday.  The district is moving equipment in preparation of the demolition of the high school next summer to prepare for our new K-12 school.

Back-to-School Open Houses August 16 & 17

The first day of school for Reading students in grades 1-12 is Thursday, August 18 and Kindergarten students on August 22. Join us for our back-to-school open houses.

Basketball Games are ON-2/9

Blue Devil Boys Basketball vs Wyoming is on today (2/9) at Reading as scheduled. Freshmen at 4:30pm, JV at 6pm, and Varsity at 7:30pm.

Fine Arts Melodies & Masterpieces
Melodies and Masterpieces! Reading Schools will be hosting a day of the arts March 12th, 10am- 3pm. There will be a pancake breakfast from 9-11 for $5, artwork from all the schools, music performances throughout the day and other activities for the family. Come see what the Arts have to offer! 

Reading Superintendent, Dr. Joel Anderson, is accepting nominations for the 2016 Educator of the Year for Reading Community City Schools. Nominations are due no later than Friday, March 25, 2016.

Parent Football Meeting on May 31

Reading High School's new varsity head football coach is holding a parent meeting on Tuesday, May 31 at 7 p.m. in the RHS cafeteria. Coach Rob Page's football meeting is for parents of students in grades 7-12.  Hope to see you there!

Reading Schools Closed-Friday, September 30

Overnight, a woman in Reading was attacked by a male dressed as a clown and the perpetrator has not been apprehended.  During the attack, the victim reported a threat was made against our students. 

Jerry Overbeck Night, Tuesday, January 24, 2017

On Tuesday, January 24th the Reading Boosters will host "Jerry Overbeck Night" prior to the start of the Varsity Boys Basketball Game at Reading High School.  Bryan Young, Jennifer Raleigh and Susan Blackson will be honored during the game for saving Coach Overbeck's life.  We will have baskets to raffle off, split the pot, baked goods and some shooting games.  Please come join us and help out the Overbeck family.

The Reading Board of Education will accept Interdistrict Open Enrollment application beginning Monday, April 4, 2016  8:00 a.m. thru Friday, May 13, 2016 3:00 p.m.  The application must be submitted in person to the Superintendent's Office located at 1301 Bonnell Avenue, Reading, OH 45215.  Applications will be date and time stamped.  Click here for application and further details.



Central Wins National Contest!

Central Elementary has been selected by Scholastic as the winning school in Ohio of the first-ever Dav Pilkey ‘Be a Reading Superhero’ Educator Contest and will receive a new book for every student to bring home to kick-off summer reading. 


The Reading High School soccer program is hosting an alumni/futures soccer game and cornhole tournament on Saturday, July 30, at Rohm and Hass field beginning at 10 a.m. This is a fundraiser for BOTH the girls and boys high school soccer teams.

Reading Senior Named National Merit Commended Student David Furniss holding his certificate as National Merit Commended student.

We are proud to announce that Reading High School senior David Furniss has been named a National Merit Commended Student in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship program.

Board Honors Reading Parents and Athletic Trainer for Lifesaving Efforts Reading Board Honors Lifesavers

Reading athletic trainer and two parents were honored at the December Board meeting for their quick action to help resuscitate freshman basketball coach Jerry Overbeck at the Reading boys’ basketball game on December 2.

During the Reading Board of Education Meeting on March 16, Mr. Jim Perdue presented the Reading Board of Education with two plaques that were awarded at the Ohio School Boards Association Southwest Region Spring Conference on March 8. 

Reading Community Walk-A-Thon

Saturday, July 2nd at 4:00 p.m. the American Legion and Reading Community Schools will host the 1st Annual Reading Community Walk-A-Thon.  

Daniel Kist Named New Principal of Hilltop

Mr.  Daniel Kist has been named the new Principal of Hilltop Elementary. The Reading Board of Education approved Mr. Kist at its meeting on July 6. Mr. Kist has been the school counselor at Hilltop since 2001.

Boosters Bash

The Athletic Boosters annual bash will be held Saturday 10/15/16 at the Haffey Fieldhouse from 8pm to midnight.  The cost is $15 per person or $25 a couple (no pre sale).  There will be split the pot and a basket raffle.  Beverages and light snacks will be provided.  Feel free to bring an appetizer to share.  Hope to see you there!

Reading Takes Top Two Spots at Mock Trial Districts

History was made in Batavia as the Reading High School mock trial team not only won their third straight district title, but they also finished runner-up with both of Reading’s teams qualifying for the Regional Championships.

Top Scholars Honored; College Signing Ceremony

On Monday, April 25, Reading High School hosted its Top Scholars ceremony, honoring seniors who have a GPA of 3.75 and above. The program included a college signing ceremony. College representatives from the colleges selected by our top scholars were present to recognize these top students.

Mock Trial Team Earns 8th Trip to State Championship!

The Mock Trial team earned its 8th trip to the State Championship with an undefeated regional runner-up finish on Friday, February 19.  Team Blue made it through arguably the toughest region in the State by defeating teams from Elder and Sycamore.  

Mock Trial Finishes Top Four in State!

Congratulations to Reading High School's mock trial team for finishing in the top four in the state! Almost 400 teams from across Ohio started in the competition, and we are so proud of our Blue Devils for making it so far!

Summer Reading Program Earns State Honors

Reading School District’s Summer Learning Academy, coordinated by Intervention Specialist Kelly Welling, has been selected as a 2016 Outstanding Student Program by the Ohio School Board Association.

Reading Senior Receives Three Nominations to US Naval Academy

Mikayla Dick, senior at Scarlet Oaks/Reading High School, has received three nominations for the United States Naval Academy.  She is expected to hear news as to whether she will receive an appointment from the Naval Academy by April.

Reading Treasurer Receives Auditor of State Award

A recent audit of Reading Community City Schools by the Auditor of State’s office has returned a clean audit report. The district’s Treasurer/CFO, Cary Furniss, excellent record keeping has earned it the Auditor of State Award.


Chuck LaFata Named Interim Superintendent

At the regular meeting held on June 22, the Reading Board of Education named Chuck LaFata as the interim Superintendent of the Reading Community City School District effective immediately. 



Architect Selected for New School!

On Monday, February 22, a team of representatives from Reading School Board, administration, and OFCC interviewed the three architectural firms that were finalists for our new school project. The team selected VSWC Architects, Inc. (previously Voorhis, Slone, Welsh and Crossland) located in Mason, Ohio.

Reading Offers Free Summer Lunch Program

Reading is hosting its annual Summer Lunch Program. The district is providing free lunches for children ages 1-18 and reduced rates for adults on Mondays-Fridays from May 31-August 12, 2016. Lunch is offered from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the Central Cafeteria.
