Board Honors Reading Parents and Athletic Trainer for Lifesaving Efforts

Reading Board Honors Lifesavers

Tonight, the Reading Board of Education and Reading Fire Department honored Susan Blackson, Reading athletic trainer, and Reading parent, Bryan Young, a St. Bernard paramedic for their quick action to help resuscitate freshman basketball coach Jerry Overbeck at the Reading boys’ basketball game on December 2. Parent Jennifer Raleigh, a UC trauma nurse, was also honored for her efforts but was unable to be at the meeting. Coach Overbeck was also there for an emotional reunion with the people who helped save his life.

"They were the right people at the right time who stepped up to give Jerry the care that he needed. There was no hesitation," said Reading High School Principal, Dennis Ramsey. "We couldn't be proud or more thankful of the outcome."

Mr. Ramsey also credited varsity basketball coach, Billy Stidham and Reading athletic director, Jon Payne for their efforts that night.

The Reading community has also stepped up to help the Overbeck family with their medical expenses with close to $11,000 being raised so far through a GoFundMe campaign. #BlueDevilPride'
