Detention

All of us at Hilltop Elementary appreciate your efforts each night in making sure your child completes his/her homework assignments and returns them to school.  Homework grades are an essential component of evaluating your child’s academic progress.  They are also reflected on the interim reports.

When students do not complete or turn in homework on a regular basis, their academics suffer as do their study and work habits.  We are noticing that there are students who fall into the category of not completing homework.

Starting in January, we will begin an after school detention program in 3rd grade to address those students who are not doing their homework.  The detention will be assigned to a student who does not turn in homework to his/her teacher.  Each student will be allowed one missed assignment, per teacher/per quarter, before a detention is assigned.  Assigned detentions will need to be served the FOLLOWING day.  We are allowing the 1-day’s notice so that arrangements can be made for transportation and other responsibilities a student may have, including caring for younger siblings.

The after school detentions will be every day, Monday – Friday, and will last from 2:45 - 3:15.  It is the student’s responsibility to bring their books, supplies, planner, and of course, the overdue assignment(s).  They will not be permitted to leave the classroom once they are checked in at 2:45.

When a student is assigned the detention, a copy of the written notice will be stapled in the daily planner.  That copy will be our way of communicating with you about the scheduled detention.  If a student does not serve the detention or does not return the slip, parents will be notified and two detentions will be given.  If a student misses a second detention, parents will be notified and Friday/Saturday School will be given.  Every detention a student misses after his/her second missed detention will result in a Friday/Saturday School.  An example would be as follows:

Student A:  Either misses detention or forgets to bring back detention form for the first time = 2 detentions

Student A: Either misses detention or forgets to bring back a detention form the second time = Friday/Saturday School

Student A:  Every time student A forgets to bring his/her form back or misses a detention will result in a Friday/Saturday School

Missed detentions due to absence from school will be re-scheduled
