12th Graders

The end of the school year is quickly approaching and there are a number of important dates and information you will need to know about.

Friday, May 7th there will be a mandatory meeting for all seniors.
The meeting will be in the Cafeteria here at Reading Jr-Sr High and will begin at 7:45a.m.  Caps and gowns will be distributed at this meeting and we will review specific instructions for graduation on June 3, 7:30p.m.  Graduation will be held at the
Sharonville Convention Center.  If your family wants specific seating they need to arrive early enough to select those seats.  There is no limit to the number of family members who may attend. Practice for graduation will be held at 9:00a.m. June 3 and you must attend to participate in graduation.  Clear your calendar for that morning!

Honor Convocation is May 19th at 7:00 p.m.  Invitations for award recipients will be mailed the first week of May.

Reminder:  Fees and fines must be taken care of prior to graduation or diplomas and transcripts will be held.

College Entrance Exams:

We recommend that all Juniors planning to attend a four year college take the ACT and/or the SAT prior to their Senior year.  Currently there is only one test date remaining for this year so register as soon as possible.  The easiest way to find information on the ACT and SAT is to visit the test web sites: www.actstudent.org and www.collegeboard.com. Remember our High School Code number is 364360 and is very important for reporting scores back to us for your transcript. Also, many schools are requiring test scores to be sent directly from the testing agencies so be sure to list the colleges to which you plan to apply.

2010-11 Senior Conferences:

Senior conferences will be held during September and October. Parents are invited and encouraged to attend. This is an opportunity for seniors to meet with their counselor to discuss post-secondary plans and to map out the steps to reach these goals.

Activity Lists:
To prepare for your senior year when you will be applying to colleges, it is important to develop an activity list. Your activity list should include volunteer work, awards and recognitions, activities (clubs and sports) you participated in each year of high school, paid work experience and anything else that helps a college know you better. You will work on this in your American Literature class.

College Visits:

Juniors scheduling a college day must bring a note from their parent at least 3 days in advance of the visit. Upon providing this note to the Guidance Counselor Secretary they will be given a form to be signed by their teachers approving their absence. This form must be signed and filed in the Guidance Office. Students must have passing grades in all classes to take a college day. Upon return to school, students must provide documented evidence of their visit from the college. Juniors are allowed to take 2 college visits to campuses not within commuting distance. We strongly encourage students to visit their possible college choices.

Senior Pictures:
Senior photos must be taken by Thanksgiving break to be in the Yearbook and in the composite photo hung in the school hall. Call Prestige to make an appointment, 346-3800.  Juniors can begin to schedule their pictures now.  Once the Senior year begins everyone will be very busy.

College Applications:

We recommend applications be submitted by Thanksgiving of your Senior year.  Students may begin applying in August. Students applying on line need to inform their guidance counselor so we can send their transcript that is necessary for the application to be processed. Check out the “College Application Process” on this web page.

GPA continues to be important. If your freshman GPA is not one of which you are proud, improve it this year!

As you make your summer plans, keep in mind that volunteer service is an extremely valuable experience.  If you are planning on seeking employment this summer, work permits are obtained through the Guidance Office Secretary, Mrs. Bell.

Sophomores planning to attend Great Oaks next year should plan to attend the Open House at Scarlet Oaks on Thursday, May 6, from 5:30-7:30.  It is very important to keep the Oaks informed of your current address and telephone numbers.  Important information will be mailed over the summer.  Bus pass applications will be mailed from Reading Schools Central Office in August.  Make sure to return these in time to obtain your bus pass before the first day of school.

9th Graders
Freshman year is the foundation for your high school GPA that will be used for graduation, admission to college, and scholarships. At the end of this year 1/3 of your GPA will already be decided. Make sure you work hard to make that GPA a good one. Start keeping a record of all of your activities that should include all school and community activities, leadership positions, honors, awards, unique educational experiences, employment and volunteer work. This information will be updated each year and will be essential when you start the college application process.

8th Graders
This is a very important year for you because you are preparing for your high school years. Your grades this year can be used to help determine your ninth grade course placement. Students taking the first year of a foreign language or Algebra I please remember that the grade you receive this year will count as part of your high school GPA and will appear on your transcript.
