Dear Reading School Community:
Our school, along with all the buildings in the district, have adopted the nationally recognized Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. The Olweus program is a proven bullying prevention program used in countless school districts around the country. Bullying is defined as someone who repeatedly and on purpose says or does hurtful things to another person who has a hard time defending himself or herself. It involved and imbalance of power of one person over another.
The purpose of the program is to change the culture of schools to one of increased awareness by staff and students of what bullying really is. At Reading High School, we want our students to become defenders of students who are being bullied.
All of our students will follow four rules:
- We will not bully others.
- We will help students who are being bullied.
- We will include students who are being left out.
- If we know that someone is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and an adult at home.
Our teachers have been trained and students have been made aware of this program. In a short time, it has already impacted some students who have seen bullying and reported it immediately. Parents can help as well by monitoring social media sites that their children are using. Hopefully, through a combined effort of students, teachers, and families we can make significant cultural changes in our building with respect to bullying.
Thank you for your support of our efforts.
