Reading Community City Schools held a quarterly Buildings and Grounds update (Presentation) to provide residents with clear, factual information about the proposed city bond issue pertaining to a new firehouse and a potential long-term property swap related to Veterans Memorial Stadium. The presentation explained the need for a bond to address aging city and school facilities, including fire, police, and municipal buildings, as well as long-overdue upgrades to the stadium, which has not seen major capital improvements since it was built in 1967. The partnership between the City and the District is focused on improving health and safety, expanding community green space, and ensuring the stadium and fields remain available for student, youth, and public use.
Residents were also informed about what projects are included, the estimated cost and tax impact, and why the bond is structured as a single, long-term issue. Stadium improvements would include synthetic turf, a six-lane track, ADA accessibility upgrades, renovated restrooms and locker rooms, and safety improvements under the bleachers, while remaining city-owned and open to the community. The presentation addressed common questions about financing, parking, and fundraising limitations, and clarified that details of a future property transfer would only be finalized after voter approval and with formal action by both City Council and the Board of Education. Community members were encouraged to attend information sessions, ask questions, and stay engaged as the process continues.
