Reading Community City Schools Shadowing Program Policy
Purpose
The Shadowing Program at Reading Community City Schools allows prospective students to experience a typical school day alongside a current student. This helps families make informed enrollment decisions by providing insight into school culture, academics, and social life.
Reading Elementary (Grades K–6)
Overview
Prospective students in grades K–6 may shadow a current student for a designated period, as determined by the principal. Shadowing schedules may vary to ensure prospective students gain a meaningful understanding of the school's academic environment.
District Expectations
- All shadowing requests must be submitted at least ten (10) school days in advance.
- A completed Emergency Medical Authorization Form must be submitted prior to the visit.
- Shadowing sessions are limited to one per student per academic year.
- School administrators will approve the requested date after talking with the staff members involved.
- School administrators will collaborate with staff to select a student host.
- A staff member or administrator will coordinate and supervise all shadowing.
- Administrators may limit the number of shadow visitors per day to minimize disruption to the learning environment.
Parent Expectations
- Parents must complete a Shadowing Experience Request Form and Emergency Medical Authorization Form in advance.
- Visitors and guardians must check in with their state ID at the main office and follow all district safety protocols.
- Families are responsible for transportation to and from school.
- A follow-up meeting with a counselor or administrator is encouraged.
Student & Staff Expectations
- Shadow students must follow classroom rules and participate respectfully.
- Host students will be selected based on academic standing, attendance, and behavior.
- Teachers will be informed ahead of time and retain the right to decline visits during assessments or sensitive content areas.
Reading Junior/Senior High (Grades 7–12)
Overview
Prospective students in Grades 6–11 may shadow a current student for a half or full school day to experience classes, electives, and extracurricular activities. Shadow visits are arranged through the counselor or administrator.
District Expectations
- All shadowing requests must be submitted at least ten (10) school days in advance.
- A completed Emergency Medical Authorization Form must be submitted prior to the visit.
- Shadowing sessions are limited to one per student per academic year.
- School administrators will approve the requested date after talking with the staff members involved.
- School administrators will collaborate with staff to select a student host.
- A staff member or administrator will coordinate and supervise all shadowing.
- A daily limit of shadow visitors will be enforced to minimize disruption.
Parent Expectations
- Parents must submit a Shadowing Experience Request Form and Emergency Medical Authorization Form in advance.

Student & Staff Expectations
- Host students must be in good academic standing with strong attendance and behavior.
- Shadow students must comply with all school rules and dress code.
- Teachers can reschedule or limit shadowing during tests or if classroom dynamics require it.
General Requirements for All Shadowing Experiences
- Visitors must wear a visitor badge and remain with their assigned host or staff escort.
- Shadowing may be ended at any time due to behavior concerns or schedule conflicts.
