Clinic Procedure Guidelines & Dismissing Students

  • Students seen in the clinic will be encouraged to stay at school if possible.
  • Comfort measures will be offered as appropriate.
  • Student illness, injuries, and concerns will be triaged by the school nurse and treated as appropriate.
  • If a student needs to go home, the school nurse will contact their parent or guardian.
    • If their parent or guardian is not available, Final Forms will be used to obtain emergency contacts.
    • Only those listed as emergency contacts will be contacted. For example: No one listed in Final Forms is answering the phone and the student asks you to call his aunt who is not listed–this is not permissible.
    • If a parent/guardian is contacted, he/she may give permission for someone not listed as an emergency contact to pick the student up. They should bring a photo ID when they arrive to pick up the student.
  • A student who has a temperature of 100.0 or greater must be sent home early from school.
    • The school nurse will keep the student sequestered until he/she can be picked up.
    • The student must be kept out of school until fever free for 24 hours (under 100.0℉) without the use of any antipyretic medications such as Tylenol or Advil.
  • A student who is vomiting at school must be sent home early.
    • The school nurse will keep the student sequestered until he/she can be picked up.
    • The student should be without vomiting for at least 24 hours prior to returning to school.
    • Exceptions to this include:
      • A student with a pre-existing condition that makes them prone to vomiting.
      • A student with a cough that triggers gag reflex.
      • A student who states he/she vomited but may not have.
  • A student who is having diarrhea at school must be sent home early.
    • The school nurse will keep the student sequestered until he/she can be picked up.
    • The student should be without episodes of diarrhea for at least 24 hours prior to returning to school.

  • A student must be present at school by second bell in order to be permitted to participate in extracurricular activities that afternoon. Exceptions to this rule would be for excused tardies for medical appointments or similar circumstances in which a doctor’s note must be provided.
  • A student who is sent home sick or picked up by a parent with the reason being sick will not be permitted to participate in any after school or extracurricular activities that day or during their illness period.

All of the above listed policies and procedures, as well as general clinic care, will be carried out individually with careful consideration of the assessment findings, judgment, and at the discretion of the school nurse.
